At night I just can't fall asleep. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.
I lay there and just think doing nothing. I know I need to get some sleep but I just can't. I try reading a book that doesnt help me fall asleep. I try playing with my PSP so I can fall asleep but that dosen't work.

What should I do?

Three methods that work for me:
1. Talk yourself into relaxing your whole body starting at your toes and moving up to your head. I run an internal dialog - "my toes are getting tingly, the feeling is moving up to my ankle's, etc"
Basically, it is self-hypnosis/meditation.
2. I also use the counting method. It distracts me so my mind doesn't wander to thoughts that keep me awake. I usually start at 100 and go backwards. If I start at 1, my mind tends to wander.
3. I tell myself a story. Rather than make up something from scratch, I try to work myself into some story I already know from a book, movie, or real life. Again - it's the distraction that helps my mind calm down enough to sleep.

Other things to try:
Hot bath - our body temps naturally drop when we sleep. By taking a hot bath and then getting into bed, your body feels more sleepy.
Hot milk - may be an old wives tale but it seems to work. Alot of sleeping problems are psychologically induced.
Don't play PSP or watch TV - they act as stimulants.
I have used books on tape to help me fall asleep.

I think having trouble sleeping is one of the worst feelings in the world so I have tried many things. I think it is mostly a problem of mind over matter.

i went to a health store where they distribute vitamins and herbal remedies and asked for a sedative equivalent. they introduced me to chamomile tea. when i drank it couldn't discern any effect.

a friend had the shakes from stopping alcohol and asked if i had Valium. i could only offer him chamomile tea. he drank it and it stopped his shakes!

since then i found that rather than just steep it, it may be boiled for a few minutes and it really helps a person to fall asleep. maybe it could work for you.

there is a footnote. sometimes, when a person waits for the effect it hampers the progress of the product. many people don't know just how strong the mind is and that it is just as capable of harm as it is of good.
