I'm assuming there is fresh water and food (ie. fruit/edible vegetation. While matches sound like a good idea, they will eventually run out. Instead try a magnifying glass for starting a fire. The second item would be a mirror (not to look at yourself) but you can use it's flash reflection to signal overhead planes (this is actually based on a real-life experience of a little Innuit (Eskimo) boy who was washed out to sea on an ice floe and while they searched for days they couldn't find him. They were about ready to give up the search, when one of the spotters saw a bright flash from an ice floe a long way out to sea. He was actually using a big flensing knife's bright surface.

A good knife. It can be used for a multitude of purposes. A magnifying glass to start a fire, and as a signaling device.
