I mean, I'm sure they "know" it's wagging, but is it a voluntary action, or involuntary?

Can be voluntary or involuntary. Involuntary when they get excited and happy but voluntary because they can use it to swat away insects and to help cool their body off when they get too hot.

I know there's at least a portion of the time it's voluntary because one of my dogs will wag hers when we ask where her tail is. Sometimes she'll be lying down with her tail under her and she will just twitch the end, but she always wags when we ask her to.

They wag their tails because they are happy to see you or are happy b/c of something that you are saying. My dog has levels of excitement and you can tell with her tail the more it's wagging in a circle the happier she is.

I think that it is involuntary, because when they are excited their tails always seem to wag.

Yes, they know when they are wagging there tail. When they are happy they wag, when the are afraid they put it between there legs. When the are going to eat you its all puffed up and standing straight back.

i think that it's both. because a dog wags its tail to show how its feeling, but sometimes it will still wag when its digging a hole, etc

i think its invoulentary because its just like when your scared you frown. When my dogs are excited they wag their tails but when they are scared they put it betwenn their legs.
