It can be a very bad thing. It can lead to confusion and mistrust for other things that may be true. For instance:
In some Bibles, John1:1 says in part: "...and the Word was with God and the Word was God." Such a rendering of this verse has led millions of people to believe that Jesus is God. They ignore other parts of the Bible that contradict this. John 3:16, 17 says that God sent his Son into the world. So who came to earth? Was it God or God's Son?
The correct reading of John 1:1 should thus be: "...the Word was with God and the Word was a god." And besides, how can the Word be WITH God and BE God at the same time?

Contradictions are made up of one thing that is the truth and one thing that isn't (or they're made up of two things that aren't true).
Go with the one thing that is true, and you'll be smarter every time. What you're talking about are polar issues, not contradictions.
This is a contradiction:
1 + 1 = 2
1 + 1 = 3
Both can't be right, and only one of them will advance you to more complex math. Believing in the power of contradictions will get you kicked out of college level math.

You have answered your own question. But did you? The assumption that contradiction is an integral part of progress only applies to knowledge.
If I tell my child to not play in the street and my neighbor says it is OK and contradicts me is that OK?

The appearance of contradiction is simple a lack of understanding.

My favorite quote comes from Arthur C Clarke:
"I contradict myself? Very well, I contradict myself. I am large. I contain much."

The Word never contradict itself, only the understanding of those who read it, because everyone has its own individual interest and most intersst contradict because it is self-focused.
That's why Murphy's law said:
"If you want to please everybody, No one Will Like it!"

As long as the contradiction is realized I guess it wouldn't be so bad
