No you can not bring your own personal gun.

The Mini 14 came out in 1974 and is designed for the 223 Remington round (it says that right on the gun, go look). The users manual says it can fire "standardized US military or factory loaded sporting 223 (5.56) cartridges manufactured in accordance with US Industry practice." But that users manual ALSO came out in 1974.

Since that time, the standard US military round for the M16 was replaced. NATO did not like it. What NATO and the USA uses now is the 5.56 x 45 NATO round. (Commonly called the 5.56 NATO) This new round was designed by FN of Belgium. It has the same external dimensions as the 223 but is quite different internally and more powerful.

Ruger never changed its users manual and as far as I know, they never re-evaluated their Mini-14 to see if it could handle this new, upgraded round. (The Mini 14 has been discontinued so it is unlikely Ruger will ever make such a test. )

This kind of problem is one reason out of many why the military does NOT allow personal weapons.

And it goes back to one of the basic rules of gun safety. NEVER put a cartridge in a gun that it is not specifically designed for. Just because it fits does not mean it is safe. The Mini 14 was never designed for the 5.56 NATO....it will blow up in your face.

There are standards for types and sizes of ammunition for combat according to rules of engagement. Even though the mini-14 and the m-16 have the same type 5.56 or .223, I would assume that the military wouldn't allow it for more than obvious reasons. The mini-14 is a superb rifle for any real marksman. My mini-14 shoots 4" groupings at 300 yards. It's all about mastering your rifle. M-16's are designed to shoot these groupings right out of the box with iron sites without tweeking the gun and With a lot more maintenance and pieces to figure out. You would probably want the M-16, accuracy, service, and quality, but the mini-14 in my opinion in the right hands is a close secondIf ruger made the magazines to comply with the m-16 it would make the gun better. Get some after market Iron sites for the mini or better yet a good scope and it is an excellent firearm.

Number one you dont want a mini 14 in a war situation, thats not a combat gun...Number 2 the military gives you one of the best combat guns to use...Number 3, NO you cant bring your own weapon but you can use what you find when you get to iraq and I hear there is a crap load of AK's just laying everywhere.

NO, you cannot bring personal firearms to Iraq. The military does not allow you to have personal firearms in combat situations.
