a camera that can take upclose shots of spiderlings that captures a lot of detail, but yet can take quality long distance (w/ zoom)shots.
been using a kodak cx6230 and all the upclose shots have been out of focus. is it the camera or operator error?

I agree with the first poster who said you need to be in Macro mode. I have a Fujifilm Finepix F10. I bought it for the low light performance, but it also happens to have a very good macro mode. I used it to take a picture of my eyeball and I can see the reflection of my camera in my pupil. It will focus less than an inch away. Just be warned that the flash is to the side so the lighting might be tricky.

Make sure that you are using the macro setting when taking closeups. Don't zoom during macro shots, instead move the camera closer to or away from the subject. Press the shutter release button half way down to allow the camera to focus then depress the button the rest of the way to take the shot.
I tried looking up the specs for your camera on the kodak site but the pages wouldn't load. Consult your manual for the focal limitations of your camera's macro setting.
