Robotics is the science of designing/fabricating something electrical or mechanical (or both) that performs a specifc set of tasks in an automatic (without repetative human interaction) way. Everyone understands that a robot arm or R2D2 is a robot, but there are lots of other examples that are less obvious - the automatic car wash you drive through is a very large robot. Another example is your home's furnace or AC. The thermostat is its brain and set of program instructions, and the fan and heat exchangers respond to perform the task of heating or cooling your house. Robots and Robotics are everywhere and have been for quite a while. Hope that helps.

Robotics is a branch of science that deals with the design of robots. It is also consider to have the analysis of forces acting on a structure. In designing an industrial robot, the forces acting on each link must be carefully analyzed, making calculations, making decisions in performing the operations of machines.

Robotics is the branch of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science that deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing. These technologies deal with automated machines that can take the place of humans in dangerous environments or manufacturing processes, or resemble humans in appearance, behavior, and/or cognition. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/06/10/idUSnGNX6C1r2L+1d1+GNW20140610
