Parasites

Contaminated or unfiltered water
Contaminated soil
Contaminated fruits and vegetables
Raw or rare meat
Pets
Mosquitoes
Contact with feces
Contact with someone with parasites

A parasite is an organism that lives by feeding upon another organism. Parasites living in the human body feed on our cells, our energy, our blood, the food we eat and even the supplements we take. There are several types of parasites: protozoa are single celled organisms that are only visible under a microscope, while worms come in all sizes from threadworms, that measure less than one centimeter, to tapeworms that grow up to 12 meters in length.

A stool analysis is the most common method used to detect parasites. However, stool tests results can show a false negative if the parasite lives in the small intestine or elsewhere in the body. If the parasites are in the liver, heart or lungs, a stool test would commonly result in a false negative.

Well, my first instinct is call Gregory House (TV show). Just kidding. What I think is that, maybe it's a tape worm. Barbados could have unclean ocean water. If she may have accidently drank the ocean or tap water, the parasite could easily travel to her intestines. Tape worms eat whatever their home eats, and they can cause terrible diarrhea because they are reacting with the intestinal bacteria. Anyway, I really don't know I'm not a doctor. But I hope your cousin get's better.

It is probably down to a parasite but you must put your faith in the professional medical services provided by the hospital. You have numerous good replies if you want to guess the cause of the problem - but how will that help your cousin. I know the problem will have to be diagnosed through blood and other related tests.

Their lives, from commencing to end, are chaotic and disorganized. have self assurance me, you're in a much extra acceptable place to experience this injustice now and deal w/ melancholy than have BPD and have the state pay for social centers.

Sounds like a range of possibilities from traveller's diarrhoea, other infections, inflammatory bowel disease ...

The hospital will be able to manage her from a supportive care point of view, even if they cannot find what is the actual cause.

Fluids (through an intravenous line or careful oral fluid replacement) will keep her from getting sicker from diarrhoea and dehydration.

Appropriate antibiotics if they can find anything to treat ...

Perhaps anti-inflammatory medications.

yes i think you must take your cousin to a specialist tropical disease hospital.. two of my friends checked themselves into a tropical disease hospital after getting ulcers on their skin after a visit to Africa. Their local doctors didnt know what was wrong. the tropical disease hospital said that if they hadnt had admited themselves then there would have been major consequenses. it turned out that they'd picked up a parisite in Africa.

addition:
i cant believe that the poster above (Platobeenz) is so ignorant.
please ignore the little kid.

Have they done a stool sample? This would probably be the first step to finding out what it could be. Could be anything from food poisoning e-coli, to giardia (a water parasite) to a number of other things

Ah, well I'm glad you have asked us amateur physicians on Y Answers to diagnose the problem. Now- Loss of sun stroke and holidaying in Barbados. Mmnn- That might give rise to- Has she lost her appetite? Stomach cramps are irrelevant- The wife gets those and she's never been to the West Indies. Let's forget diao- I can't spell it. So- What are we left with? Sick. Ah, she's sick. I think we ought to get her to a doctor. ps Loving your cousin is not a good idea. Inbreeding can lead to becoming a member of the Royal Family and you have to attend the Royal Variety Performance.

I do not know much about the area but when I lived outside the country I picked up amoebiasis. You might ask if they are checking for parasites. . . . just a thought.
