I ordered a wedding ring from an online jeweler and I love it. The only problem is that I ordered the extra heavy version and this ring is not heavy at all. It's light and thin. Is there a chance that the gold will eventually wear away or is it okay to keep this ring?

Gold is a very malleable metal and will thin with constant wear over the years.

You will find many women who have worn a wedding ring for years will either have the ring shank added to in order to strengthen it or will have the wedding ring shank soldered to the engagement ring.

One of the favorite things to do with a wedding band that has begun to thin noticeably is to have the gold (and any stones) reused in a new--and probably more expensive--wedding ring.

I always tell my clients that the wearing away of the wedding band is just a testament to a strong and enduring marriage.

How hard are you on jewelry? Do take off your ring when you sleep, shower, do dishes, do yardwork, or workout or do you wear your ring all the time? If you take your ring off when you're doing the above then the one you have may be fine. If you don't, you may want to shop around and see if you can find something heaver.

I'm really hard on my jewelry. I wore one of the prongs holding my solitare down in 6 months. Needless to say, I now only really wear my ring when I'm going out. Most days I don't wear it at all. (My husband is fine with it, afterall, I don't need to wear a ring to know I'm married).

My dad's wedding band had mill work, sometimes known as beading around the top and bottom of the band. He wore his for so long that all the mill work has worn off. You can't even tell that it was ever there.

It's unlikely it will 'wear away' but it will wear especially if worn with another ring.

My fmil has stopped wearing hers all the time because of thinning.
