John Lennon was an atheist and this was an appeal for people to imagine what the world would be like without religion or countries (the way Lennon dreamed it should be). There would be very little violence and we'd have world peace.
Of course he acknowledges in the song how hard it would be for many people to give up their beliefs in heaven and their intolerance and strident feelings of nationality, but it can be done if you just imagine it.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Read the words and then maybe you will find your answer : )
Take all the crap out of Power and Control of the people and if the all could just live in Love what a wonderful world this would be
If only it could just be
Love & Blessings

He is asking us to imagine a world without all the things which divide us, including religion and wealth. He is, to my thinking, a little on the cynical side, using terms such as "I wonder if you can". It could also be seen as a challenge to think differently to the present.
Great song, very moving.

To me the song is about spiritual unity. The idea that we are all connected in one brotherhood.

I wish I had better words to describe, but the song says it all.

he says "imagine there's no heaven. no religion too..." i think his point was that if people just believed in good morals, life would be less complicated.

Honestly, when I listen to the lyrics it sounds like a creepy world of clones with not individual perspective - I don't feel peace is really worth that.
