No, it's not too early. You could have began earlier. If she shows and interest, let her color. Give her blank paper and let her make lines, etc. She won't be able to stay in the lines but praise her and praise the colors she uses. Make it positive.

I think it depends on the child. My daughter is 18 months and until recently she seemed more interested in eating the crayon than coloring with it, but my little brother loved to color at 9 months. I bought her the Crayola Color Wonderful Finger Paints (they don't stain) and those have been great and i don't have to worry about turning my back for a sec.

Not at all! A perfect time to start. A great time to do some finger painting too (If you're wary about using regular paint you could start with just shaving cream on the kitchen table...they can practice making circles and you could draw letters in the shaving cream and name them while they're having fun experimenting. Some parents will say they'll put their hands in their mouth or will make too much of a mess---but as long as you're in the kitchen using washable paint, who cares about a washable mess that can be cleaned up! As far as fingers in the mouth, by that age, my kids could be reasoned with and I just explained that if they did put their fingers in their mouth that the paint would be put away.... They knew I was serious and just never tried it. My daughters both tried coloring on the floor (instead of paper) a couple of times.... The first time I explained that we don't color on ANYTHING but paper, and then walked around the room asking: "Should we paint on the wall? NOoooooo..... How about the table? Noooooo...." Both girls did try it (maybe they forgot, maybe they were testing me...) and I simply said, "We don't color on anything except paper. Now I will take the crayons away for today." I lived through the temper tantrum that ensued and neither girl tried it a third time. Don't underestimate what kids can understand at even 16 months! :) Good for you for wanting to enrich your daughter's creativity!

We started with our daughter around 16 months. We tried earlier, but she kept trying to eat the crayons.

You can get great crayons for infants. They are shaped like a ball and fits into the hand of a small child who can't even hold a crayon yet. My kids loved them. They are called finger crayons, but the kids hold them in the palms of their hands. Check the link below...

No, it's not too early as long as you make sure that she doesn't eat the crayons. Try tapeing the paper to the table so it won't move around all over the place. She can make all kinds of pretty pictures!!!! I bet Grandma would just love to have some of her works on her fidge.

I started at about 18 months. It really depends on the child. When they are old enough to know not to eat the crayon or marker, they're ready!!

As soon as my daughter could hold a crayon and knew what it was meant for. 16 months isn't too soon.

If you watch her so she doesn't eat the crayons and can properly hold a crayon, go for it. My daughter, who is 18 months, can't do this yet; however, she's a preemie and developmentally behind.

Not too early if she seems interested (even if only for a minute) and doesn't eat the crayons! LOL Have fun!!!!
