In the beginning, your doctor will decide that for you. Then, if the medication he/she prescribes is not reacting well on you, you will tell him/her, and the prescription will be changed (or at least the doseage). This can happen several times until you and the doctor are satisfied that the medication is working well on you.
*The important thing is to get to a doctor and be diagnosed. Do this as soon as possible.*
In the meantime, do not drink caffeine or alcohol (caffeine is a stimulant (nervous) and alcohol is a depressant (depression). Remember that chocolate also contains caffeine (and in a few cases, a bit of alcohol). And, NO, alcohol and caffeine DON'T cancel each other out--lol--but some people think they do.
You should get out some self-help books from the library on depression and anxiety. You should also take out a beginners book on meditation. You should familiarize yourself with aromatherapy, and use the ones that are for depression and for anxiety. You can drink Chamomile Tea, which is calming.
Get some fresh air and exercise in the daytime--every day.
Walk as much as you can (rather than ride).
Keep separate journals of your good days and your bad days. Do not throw them out--later they will show you how much you have improved--which is a good thing.
Look at nature--the trees, grass, flowers, the weather--think about how amazing the changes in them are.

Well, you should see a therapist and a doctor, preferably a psychiatrist, but an internist will do.
Therapy in conjunction with a mild antidepressant such as prozac (available in generic and widely used) can begin to help you in as little as 2 weeks. Once you get your worries in order with the therapist you may not even need the antidepressants any more. I only took them for a year.

hi,
its horrible to feel like that all the time, i feel for you.
there are a few things that you could do to try to make things feel better.
if you are asking about antidepressants, they can be very useful and you should go to talk to your doctor about your feelings and tell him you feel depressed and nervous.
but there are other things that you can do to help yourself feel a bit better:
1. there are self help books on depression which can be helpful- have a search on Amazon for books on mood and depression - send me a message through my profile if you'd like suggestions for good books.
2. join a club or get a hobby and meet people outside of your usual circle of friends - this can be great for feeling fresh and feeling that you are doing something new and exciting in your life.
3. get out more to get fresh air and exercise, and maybe get a bicycle and go for some long rides. exercise can be a great mood booster.
4. make sure you are eating healthily - loads of fresh veg, salad and fruit and some fresh (i dont mean eat it raw) unproccessed meat or fish.
best of luck, and take care of your self

An antidepressant, like Zoloft. Any physician can write a prescription. In my opinion, psychiatrists are a waste of money. Make sure you give the medicine at least 3 weeks to start working.

I hate to sound like Tom Cruise here but you should try other ways to ease your anxiety. I don't think mood altering pills are always a good thing. I do realize however there are situations that require taking medication but it should be a last resort.

Do not bypass this by taking something. Face it head on and deal with it. Do not go to a psychologist either. They will give your feelings a complicated name and then you are still left with the task to deal with it. Accept it as your special way of being.

Sorry to sound like a broken record but you need to see a psychiatrist. They are the only one that can tell you if you have depression, bi polar or an axiety disorder. They can give you the right medication.

i'm suffering from the same thing. its so hard. talk to your doctor. I was refered to a neurologist. could be a chemical imbalance. i agree, do not take anything that is not prescribed for you. I take vitamin B complex and Sam-E which is a natural mood stablizer (check it out at walmart!) and i hear Omega 3 is great for depression. hang in there, i'm trying myself.

Go to the doctor and he will help you. You have anxiety/depression. I have been there. I take medication; and feel so much better. Do it.
