I went to my bank today. I received a bankwire of $330 from my family in Michigan. They said the $330 hasn't yet "hit" the card. This has never happened before. I'm so fed up! Thanks for all the answers so far I appreciate it!

debit cards run 24 hrs behind. So if an automatic payment came in today...funds would not be available until tomm. Also some companies will prevent you from using your debit card on certain internet websites...the bank i worked at would not allow online gambling.

the bank may not let you pay some merchants - especially internet ones - big amounts of money over the internet. It's probably found that some places are more likely targetted by fraud artists.

Also - some cards have limits on total daily and weekly transactions. (Mine's limited to $400/day, $1000/week in cash withdrawals on ATMs for example. harder for a crook to clean you out). Check with your bank if this is the first time you've tried to do a $300+ transaction, especially over the internet.

Some cards also have fancy programs to try to spot suspicious activity. Certain behaviour triggers that. One time, I used my card in a pay phone tried to rent a car. The Visa people flagged it, because it looked like I was a fraudster who tried a small amount ($1 on the pay phone) to see if it was still good, then went to the car rental who put an even $300 (reserve) on it.

Sometimes hotels and other vendors gain a pre-approval for an amount for more than the actual purchase. Your bank may also have daily spending caps but it is unlikely since the amount is so low. Check your balance again on your computer or bank customer service line. There may be pending charges that affect your available balance.

Either your bank account does not have $290.00 in it or your bank has a minimum policy. Check with your bank to find ou their rules on this. Just call the 800 number behind the debit card.
