wow, overwhelming response for labs. However, the attributes that i am looking for are as follows: easily trainable, loyal, protective...

Not implying a lab is not any of these.

The energy part is not a huge deal. i run 5miles in the morning and 5-7 in the evening. Thats another reason i need a large dog.

There is no one breed/mix or size of dog that is more easily trained then another. Each dog is trainable under it's own merits and not those of it's breed or size.
Contrary to what some people believe Golden Retreivers & Labrador Retreivers are no more loyal, trainable, even tempered than any other breed/mix nor are Poodles any smarter then any other breed/mix.

I think any dog is trainable if you are willing to put forth the time and effort into the dog for a successful outcome. Just remember to be patient.

Australian Sheperd, Border Collie, Lab I would personly go to a shelter and find a dog in need they would enjoy having a home and be greatful to you and would be protective.

Retrievers and Labs. But they need exercise or they can be quite stubborn and outragiously high energy.

Border collies are the most intelligent dogs, but you have to have room for them to run around, and things to do, or they get bored.

Beagles, retrievers, labradors, australian cattle dogs (red or blue), boarder kollies.

Hyperactivity in kollies, high energy needs as with retrievers

Labrador Retreivers. Very smart dogs, it doesn't take them very long to learn.
