i breed mini schnauzers, they are very smart and they definately communicate verbally. usually disk damage is more evident with the jumping up to or down from things. walking up stairs are the least pain causing than others ways. i wonder about the hips, but is the dog even that old? he may not be able to see, they are prone to cataracts, but again, is the dog that old? mini schnauzers are such people loving dogs, they have to be with their person, so if the dog is not wanting to follow you, it really makes me wonder that there is something causing him to resist his natural desire to follow you everywhere you go. they will have to CT scan to diagnosis soft tissue damage, x-rays helpful but only if it's skeletal. your vet needs to give him a good exam, but then again I have a 7 month old that is the most independent schnauzer I have ever had!!

There a few possibilities. Injury, arthritis etc. The only way to know for sure is to have him examined by the vet. Once the problem has been and treatment started your dog will likely start going up and down stairs again.

You need to take your baby to the Vet if he was climbing the stairs before now ,you know that is not right. The vet will need to see him before he can really give you a diagnosis. It could be anything from a tumble that scared him to a serious injury or even a disease that has just begun to rear it's head. Please take it to the vet!!!Good Luck I hope it is just a temporary think and nothing major.

are your stairs carpeted? my wiener dog refused to go upstairs because she would slip and she didnt like it. we got carpet on the stairs and she goes up like nothing now. just a suggestion. now the vet has to give the dog an xray or something before the problem can be diagnosed

I think that if your vet diagnosed this over the phone without touching the dog, I'd be changing vets.

my mini schnauzer does the same thing.. we took her to the vet and he found hip displacia... you really ought to take him to see the vet so he can give him a good going over to find the problem..

has his eyes been tested? i had a lab that went blind in later years that would whine and be scared to even go outside. so it could even been something of that nature....other wise i would chalk it up to old age and the size of the dog....

i have a feeling that he/she is right.
there is this place in Vancouver,BC,Canada (but i am sure there are other ones out there) and he does physio with dogs. My friend's dog had back problems- same problem as what you are discribing- and the physio doctor helped him and now he is as good as new!

It could have been a paw injury or back injury.
