Artical --- Opinion by G. Weigel:
"The Kerry challenge
During his campaign for the presidency, Senator John Kerry has tried in various ways to square his self-description as a "believing and practicing Catholic" with his unalloyed record of support for abortion-on-demand, including partial birth abortion. Perhaps the senator's most succinct statement of his case came in St. Louis this past January: "What I believe personally as a Catholic as an article of faith is an article of faith...(But it is not) appropriate in the United States for a legislator to legislate personal religious beliefs for the rest of the country."
In other words, Senator Kerry believes that the Catholic Church's pro-life position is a sectarian position, whose imposition on a pluralistic society would be constitutionally unwarranted — something like the Catholic Church trying to force all Americans to abstain from hot dogs on Fridays during Lent.
This is simply not true. For the past thirty-one years, the Catholic bishops of the United States have made public arguments that can be engaged by any serious person on behalf of the right to life. You don't have to believe in Petrine primacy, seven sacraments, or the two natures of Christ to engage the Catholic pro-life argument; you don't even have to believe in God. You simply have to be willing to take elementary embryology and elementary logic seriously. For the senator to suggest that the Church's position is sectarian is either woefully ignorant or deliberately mendacious. "

Please don't stereotype. Not all Catholics act in that way (I have little use for the ones that do) just as not all Christians are closed-minded and not all atheists are out to prove religion wrong.
But since SOME Catholics do, I'll try to answer your question... why? I'm guess that some of them are tired of having their religion put down and have chosen to retaliate instead of turning the other cheek. Sad, but it does happen.

Catholics are not the only ones who do this. I used to be very involved in a protestant church and believe me, they do it too. Everyone thinks they are right, so others' beliefs must be wrong. I don't really know why we are like this. I do know that we all need a lot more tolerance for other people's beliefs and lifestyles.

It seems to me that there is a fundamental tension between Catholics and other Christians. We are quite separate from one another, and therefore more likely to be critical. Catholics often have a strong sense that there is only one answer, church as there is one church, one pope, etc.
On the other hand, other Christians are often quite critical of Catholics, treating them as non-Christian idolators. At least, that's what I've seen.

I am Christian; NOT CATHOLIC....but I will definately say that it is not only Catholics who do this. Most people have a bad habbit of bashing other beliefs or trying to make other people look bad. Sad to say but it is part of human nature.

I'm sorry, I think you have your Christian faiths mixed up. It's not just the Catholics who do that. Take a look around Religion & Spirituality, and you will see that you will have to change your views. They are wrong.

Catholics are like most humans: they think they are the only ones with the right ideas.

Do you think any religions don't put down others? If we didn't allow abortions we wouldn't have products of botched abortions such as Nancy pelosi, george bush, Dick Head Cheney, televangelists, religious leaders, Al sharpton, Oprah, etc. to the 20TH power.

Same reason many people from all other religions put down other religious views.
Why are you coming down on Catholisism? Are your beliefs better than all the rest?
