And yet, so many people take the horrible alternative. Not very effective extortion, I guess.

Yes, obviously. Good or Evil, Right or Wrong, Heaven or Hell, you always have a choice, even when you choose not to decide you still have made a choice. It's not extortion, it's just the way it is so choose.

Depends on if you have a spine or not.

Take a look at the American P.O.W.s in Vietnam. They had the choice to co-operate with their captors, and have as plesant an existance as circumstances allowed; OR they could refuse to cooperate and be tortured. The vast majority chose not to co-operate and be tortured

Another example is the Christian Martyrs. St. Thomas More is probably the best example. If Henry VIII demanded More agree that Henry VIII was the Head of the Church in England. More would not agree to that, so he lost his estates, was imprisoned in the Tower, and eventually executed. Many times his friends pleaded with him to sign, many times he was told that if he signed he would have his freedom and his fortune restored, but More refused to sign, and he was killed.

Similarly look at the Book of Maccabees to see the Jews that acepted death at the hands of Antiochus rather than eat pork and foreswear the Lord.

What you are leaving out of your question is a little thing called courage. Not everyone is a slave to their passions.

I lost my kneecaps in a war with a fundie, you should have seen the other guy. No worries there. Heaven and hell are subjective. To me, God would not reward ignorance with heaven. Living my life based on a thousands year old book and that book alone would be my definition of hell. So here I am enjoying the life I know I have and not at all concerned about an afterlife I can not know exists.

How is it extortion if someone twists your arm behind your back and offers you eternal life?

If you choose the alternative, you're a moron and deserve what you get.

So WHY in the name of every sky-pixie that was ever thought up won't you look seriously at what God is TELLING you? You KNOW the stakes, and yet you continue to cater to your human pride! What's UP with that???

Your namesake knows the Truth now, BTW...
