Do you have the signed paper from when she signed over custody to you? And the school records and medical records would also be part of your proof.

When did the mother actually take the child back (when did the child start sleeping at mom's rather than your house)? If she enrolled him/her in a different school in December, and you first had the child in June, that would be getting awfully close for the "over six months" so you'd want to have additional things to show that the child was still living with you after that.

Letters from pastors or neighbors who know when the child lived with you could help. And from teachers, if you for example were the one attending school meetings and events.

What sort of money did you spend on them? Groceries? Credit card bills for children's clothes, etc.? No child support from parent(s)? Medical bills is a good start... (Still have the parent's consent form about allowing medical decisions?)

What proof the address was not just a convenience - did the school bus pick up, drop off there? Friends visit? Teachers phoned you there about him/her? Did you go to parent/teacher interviews? Talk to the principal? Pick up the child frequently from school where the teachers saw you?

After all, if the child was a dependent, and you want to claim taxes for this, presumably he/she cost you more money than what you're claiming back. There should be some bills.

I believe so. But you should ask the mother if she is claiming the child as a dependent. Because both you cant claim the same child. If so, you could also add the tuition as a deduction if you paid for it. Good luck! you can browse publication 17. you can download that on www.irs.gov
