If you're walking down the street, the girl should be furthest from the street. This way, if a car were to splash, the man would take the brunt of the water, leaving the woman clean and dry. This is a modern thing brought on by the industrial revolution. Before cars and indoor plumbing, girls would walk closer to the street so that people emptying their chamber pots out the window would pour the nastiness on the man...again leaving the woman clean and dry. Very chivalrous, eh?

In Victorian times gentlemen had their women stand on "inside". For example, if you are walking on a side walk, you should be furthest away from the street and from danger! It was a gentleman's way of being protective and courteous. Before that you stood on your man's right side. Because swords are usually hung on the left side. If a man had to draw his sword to protect your honor and you were standing on the left where the sword is drawn from, you'd get cut ! By being on the right, he can safely draw and shield you by holding his sword slightly in front of you.... I don't know if this is applicable but historically etiquette dictates you stand on the right.

According to etiquette that has long been seen as outdated, a man should walk on the "outside" of a woman, meaning that he should walk closer to the curb to protect her from cars; since back in the day, cars were not as safe as they are today and a woman in all her skirts would be hard pressed to get away from a car that was driving out of control.

The boy walks on the outside, nearest the kerb, to protect the girl should any traffic come too close. A nice old tradition

the man should be on the side nearest the street (nearest the cars going by). whether that is the right side or left side depends on the direction you're walking

Don't listen to them, you are supposed to be on the inside, you should be holding his left hand, trust me it makes a difference, I could explain it, but lets just keep it simple

Either one is fine, I suppose. But for some reason I think holding his left hand is cute.
