if im gonna be carrying the pistol, then id get the springfield in 40cal. the beretta is a bit bulky to carry around concealed. the 40 is the more potent round for self defense on the street. the xd's have no manual safety so when you need to use it, you just point and shoot, its always ready. the beretta has a safety that you may forget about in a stressful situation. if its just for the range and home defense, id get the beretta in 9mm, they look so purty especially in inox. also 9mm rounds are cheap. theyre both great guns though.

I prefer the Springfield. The Beretta is a good enough gun but is very large, this is most true in 9MM. I find the trigger on the XD easier for me to shoot with and the Springfield is less expensive.

I own 3 Beretta's, an Italian 92f, an American 92fs police special, and 96g (40sw). All of them are flawless firearms, no problems at all with any, and this is after many thousand rounds shot thru all 3 combined. I'll buy another beretta in a heartbeat.

Personally I like the Beretta. As for caliber size I would go with the 9mm cheaper and easier to get.

springfield 1911 in 45 auto
40 ( aka smith and weak ) is a weak round
ditto for the 9mm ( hence the high capacity since 9mm is known as the spray and pray round )

40cal. it's got a more powerful takedown, if you are using it for the range only then get the 9mm
