My toy poodle just had 3 teats removed due to cancer, now I have found another lump on the other side, will the vet be able to take off all that skin as well? Why didn't they find it when they did the other operation 2 weeks ago? Has anyone else had a dog in a similar situation? I wouldn't have put her through all that if they can't fix it properly!

She did have a chest xray prior to the first operation, that is all clear. They were going to spay her in the last op. but the skin was already to tight for that as well.

My dog had mammary cancer. She had to have 2 surgeries, because 2yrs after the first one, more tumors developed. In the end, she has had nearly all of her glands removed.
Mammary cancer is caused by not spaying your dog at the appropriate age. This is why I tell everyone to SPAY before the first heat. Sadly, my parents hadn't spayed this dog, which left her to develop cancer and go through painful surgeries.
If you found more lumps, you'll need to go back to the vet. If they are tumors, she'll need to have another surgery to have them removed. Numerous surgeries are just a part of the treatment.
Mammary cancer is very difficult because it spreads-a lot. Did they already do a chest xray? the cancer normally(if advanced enough) invades the lungs, so they should have checked to make sure she does not have cancer in her lungs before doing the surgery. Also, did theyspay her during the surgery? If not, they need to spay her. There is some evidence that this may help.

Overall, your dog will probably end up going through several surgeries to treat the cancer. Chemo will not be necessary unless the cancer has spread past the mammary glands. It's amazing....a simple $50 spay could have prevented my family's dog from so much pain and suffering....and could have saved us thousands in vet costs.

I really hope she gets better and you 2 continue to fight this together! Good luck!!

Please don't feel the doctor didn't "fix" her properly. One of the good reasons to spay a dog before her first heat is to decrease the chance of mammary cancer. I'm sure the lump you feel now wasn't there when the surgery was preformed. Cancer does tend to spread and unfortunately your little poodle may have it again, or not. You need to take her back to the doctor.

Mammary cancer is very fast and very aggressive, most likely the other tumor wasnt there or visible two weeks ago. Have you considered radiation or chemo?

Cancer seems to pop up whenever it wants to. Sometimes what we think is a cancer lump, turns out to be a cist or a fatty tumor. Call the pet's doctor and discuss it with him/her.

my father in law had a bird dog that evetually had to have all of her teats removed.. 3 seperate operations.. as to why they didn't find it .. it may not be another tumor.. it could be a milk gland.. take her back to the vet and ask him/her to check it .. sorry your baby has to go through this...
