My family and I are debating on which place to go in the spring, Hawaii or the Virgin Islands. The Virgin Islands were suggested because Hawaii seems so expensive. any tips, advice?

The Virgin Islands aren't cheap either. Are yo considering US or British? Total cost is actually about the same after you consider flight, rental car, food and entertainment. There is more entertainment available in Hawaii, but you have Duty Free shopping in the VI. If it is in the USVI then you even get to bring back six bottles of booze if the British, then only 5. From Hawaii you can bring back coffee. Pinapples are actually cheaper in the US grocery stores. The water is actually about 2 degrees warmer in the VI as compared to Hawaii, no biggie unless you are scuba. There are actually more, and cleaner beaches in the VI. Let me take back back cleaner. In some places a pile of beer cans and bottles means that it is a very popular beach. This is especially true for areas populated by Puerto Ricans. All of Hawaii's beaches are clean, but a lot are not swimable and not much toee if you are snorkling.

Probably more than you wanted +2 for Virgin Islands, +3 for USVI, +1 for Hawaii.

Been to both - loved both. However, I love Hawaii even more. Each of the islands is so different. Yes Hawaii can be expensive - may I give you an idea? Try a cruise - Norwegian Cruise Lines has a seven day cruise that visits the main islands. If it is your first time to Hawaii, you will get a taste of each island. Although at first glance cruising might seem expensive, you have to remember that it is your hotel and all your food (alcoholic beverages and sodas are an additional charge). Hawaii has a great culture and the 'Aloha' spirit is real.

Hawaii does not have to be expensive. You can find lots of bargains at condos or apartments by looking online. These offer a real opportunity to save money as you can have most of your meals in and only eat out on occasion. Condos and apartments are also usually less expensive and more spacious than hotels. My wife and I have been traveling to Hawaii for over 25 years and have nearly always stayed in condos. We've found lots of good tips in the Frommer's $-a-day guides for places to stay and things to do.
