Brent ~
To be completely honest with you, I don't see this fight lasting more than five rounds. The Beast would be just a little too much for El Feroz, though Vargas does and did possess the left hook to the liver to slow down Mugabi especially in his prime, but it wouldn't be enough to stop Johns all around better game.
Vargas fought and beat Winky but he loses twice to Mosley and loses horribly to De La Hoya. Mugabi fought by far the better competition in a better era of Jr. Middles. There is also the issue of Vargas having a Bully mentality, meaning he fought better if he could intimidate the guy he was fighting and In my opinion he wouldn't be able to intimidate "The Beast"
This would be a entertaining fight until John wears Fernando down with devastating overhand rights and a brutal body attack and stops him late in the 5th.
Thanks for the question Brent.

This is a pretty good match up. Mugabi was a very hard puncher and pretty strong at 154. Vargas was a tenacious fighter who could wear you down physically when he was in his prime. But Vargas wasn't a huge puncher and the question would be could he take Mugabi's punch. Vargas could move a little and box if he had to. Mugabi would just come forward and throw bombs at Vargas. Vargas would have to box in the early rounds and try to take Mugabi into the later rounds and into deep water. I see Mugabi landing a lot of hard shots early like Trinidad did against Vargas and i think Mugabi would finish him if he got him hurt really bad. Mugabi by KO in the 4th round.

I have no doubt that Mugabi would win with a 2nd round KO. With the long reach, Vargas could not get inside the jab and Vargas' defense could not stop that powerful right hand. Vargas would get caught with a right hand that stuns him when he is careless and he would get hit with another right hand and go down like Cuevas did against Hearns. Vargas does not have the patience, defense or chin to beat Mugabi. I do agree that it has to be Mugabi BEFORE the Hagler fight because the Hagler fight took too much out of Mugabi and he was never the same fighter.

Felix Trinidad (12th round) and Oscar De La Hoya (11th round) both stopped Vargas when he was supposedly in his prime. For my money, Mugabi hit harder than both Oscar and Tito (he apparently hurt Hagler with his body shots when they fought).
If he hurt an extremely strong Middle like Hagler, then El Feroz will get utterly blown away. Mugabi badly hurts Vargas, and wins by a referee stoppage in the fifth round.

Two very good fighters and a good matchup Brent F! I believe that Curry had more boxing skills than "The Beast" Mugabi who has the edge in punching power. I could see both fighters exchanging some good punches especially early in the fight with Curry taking control about the 9th round with superior boxing skills and stamina. In about the 13th round a bruised and battered Mugabi is stopped with the referee halting the contest.
