the vet says it was due to some accident that she might have fell off a 3 foot retaining wall in the back yard so it was not due to disease he said that there is nothing they could do but there might be doctor in dallas that could do surgery but that would be about 3-5 thousand dollars .

She is 3 years old so she is still very young , I am not going to let her put her down , I have 4 of my own and could not see me doing that to mine if they were not in pain and there were more options as there seems to be for Cocoa .

If it is only one leg and treatments don't work to restore mobility to that leg, the leg can be amputated. Dogs do great on three legs.

If it is in both legs, there are carts, similar to a wheelchair for dogs. As long as the dog isn't in constant pain, that is a good option as well.

Yes they have carts that are strapped on the dogs back with the legs leveled. It only works if both legs are paralyzed and this costs a lot of money. They could also amputate the paralyzed leg. Dogs can do very well with 3 legs if given time to adjust. Amputation also costs a lot of money and it depends whether the owner can afford it or not. They really should not destroy the dog if there are other options. It also depends on her quality of life. How old is the dog? Is the dog healthy and happy (besides paralyzed leg)? Is the paralyzed leg the ONLY reason the owners think the dog must be destroyed?

There are many options to them for one by the sounds of it -its just in the one leg in the back she can have the leg amputated and put into a small wheelchair or sling till she can walk on all three legs. Was there a problem with the dog that may have caused this if it is a deterioting disease in the dog it would be smart to have her put down dont make her suffer, but only if that is problem. But if that isnt the problem than save her and let her live. If they cant afford it they need to find someone who will take the time and pay for the surgery to let her live.

Oh gosh. NO WAY should they put their dog down.

WORST case scenario is that she will have to lose her back leg. Dogs are very very very capable of adjusting and work just fine using three legs given a chance.

There are also some awesome dog "wheelchairs" which have already been linked that can really assist in mobility.

She's just too young to be put down for something that is truly non fatal.

Take the dog to the vet. They can discuss options.

But seriously, if it's only one leg, there are lots of 3 legged dogs out there that are perfectly happy. If it's both, there are little doggie wheelchairs.

If their house isn't made for a wheelchaired dog, don't put it to sleep like that idiot above said. They can surrender the dog to a breed rescue where they deal with special needs dogs. What an idiotic thing to say... of course, if my house isn't right, lets just kill it!

do not put her down! that dog can still lead a full happy life, whether it be with three legs or in a doggy wheelchair. If it the cost of operations etc there are breed rescue foundations that would gladly take on some of the cost to save her.
my dog was shot by a neighbor and there was nothing we could do to save her, wheelchair or no. If they no longer want the dog I would gladly take her, even if she was handicapped. I raise chihuahuas and i would never do that to one of my babies.

If the dog can still have a good quality of life then the dog shuld not be put down. There are a number of devises that can be used for dogs with leg problems if the owner is not to lazy to take advantage of them.

Yes, they do have special little carts that you can strap a dog into, so that it moves with its front legs. However, if the neighbor's house isn't conducive to having a dog rolling around in a special cart (multiple floor levels, etc), the dog should be put to sleep. If the dog has to be carried around and held up to go poo or pee, that's no life for the poor dog anyway.

I hope they make the right decision for the poor dog.

Sorry to hear about your dog. You have options hve you tried massage theropy i hear there has been ggod results in restoring feeling and such to some injuries not saying it will work here but it's something to look into. Find someone who knows how to do deep tissue massages and maybe they can show you some techs that you can do on your dog yourself it sure can't hurt at this point. Good luck.
