King James was a homosexual!

The first edition of the English Bible commonly known as the "King James Version" was printed in 1611. King James VI & I of Great Britain

had sponsored the project, and the translators appropriately dedicated

the new Bible to him. At this point in his own personal life, King James had already been involved in a love affair with one man, the Duke of Lennox, which provoked a rebellion in Scotland; his current lover in England was a young man whose special relationship with the king would earn him the Earldom of Somerset. By 1615, however, Somerset's fortunes declined and James succeeded in luring his most famous lover, George Villiers, later Duke of Buckingham, into bed. What are we to make of these relationships between King James and his so-called "favorites?" Many earlier historians treated the subject with shock, disdain, and denial. Only recently has the subject been treated more seriously and fairly by scholars such as Caroline Bingham, Jonathan Goldberg Roger Lockyer, and David Bergeron.

Father K, I am sorry. I am fascinated because so many deny facts. It is just too much for them to comprehend.

Dog Sneeze, thank you so very much for a real laugh out loud. I had no idea that anyone actually noticed that I usually do that. Thanks for the chuckle.

Do you realize you just said don't believe everything you read -ooh no your whole concept is based on 1 book written after the events and you wont believe history recorded at the time. GASP

I'm not in denial. But King James' sexuality holds little interest to me.
King James was not the one who wrote the new translation. His sexuality has no bearing on the KJV Bible, even though it was dedicated to him.
If it turned out that King James' homosexuality did influence the KJV Bible,I could,of course, just read one of the other translations,or read it in the original language.

The kjv WAS NOT FIRST English Bible! There were SEVERAL Bibles in publication in English centuries before it...

John Wycliffe organized the first complete translation of the Bible into Middle English in the 1380s.

Search for "Middle English Bible" and "Early Modern English Bible" - You will find that the kjv was at least the tenth. Since some of the translators had multiple releases of slightly differing versions during their lifetimes, it is not that easy to "count" these versions...

So what's your point? I don't have a problem with him being gay.

He commissioned the KJV to replace what was perceived as the overly Calvinistic English translation known as the Geneva bible. It remains a very beautiful translation although much of the most memorable phrasing can be attributed to Tyndale whose English bible predates both the KJV and Geneva. Shakespeare and the KJV made English what it is today.

Having said that, please note that the literal truth of Shakespeare's plays and the KJV are roughly equivalent.

All that to argue about whether a long-dead king was gay? Does it make a difference, really?
