If you are feeding a high quality food there is no need for vitamins.

Hi. Vitamins are a great way to keep older dogs healthy. In general no brand of vitamin is better than the other. Usually they contain the same natural ingredients when compared next to the other brands. Don't get discouraged on giving him vitamins. To help him eat them wrap them in cheese or a food he likes. Cheese is good for them with it's calcium and isn't fatter in small portions. Good vitamins to give older dogs include Pet-tabs, Pet-cal, Vetenarians Best, and Yeast pills
Supplements good for dogs include:Nutri-vet hip and joint, anything with glucosamine
That isn't them all either just some small examples. All can be purchased at Petsmart, Petco, or at Kv Vet Supply which is an online site= http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/assets/html/homepage.asp?URLCheck=1

All are relativly not hard to find and all are great for your dog. Good luck!

I would probably say veterinarian approved is better.
