Constipation is actually caused by a deficiency of a particular nutrient (vitamins, minerals, enzymes) and this deficiency prevents the bowel muscles from functioning the way they should. it is necessary to assess for the cause early so as not to overlook a serious illness that should be treated urgently. You go and see a doctor to start treatment early and use the treatments that have the least potential for harm. This will prevent constipation from worsening, and it also will prevent potential damage to the colon that can be caused by the frequent use of stimulant laxatives. You should know when it is time to evaluate the cause of chronic constipation. Evaluation for the cause of chronic constipation needs to be done if there is no response to the simple treatments.

The goal of treatment in constipation should not be a bowel movement every day, but a bowel movement every 2 to 3 days without difficulty (without straining). Start with the simple things. Don't suppress urges to defecate. When the urge comes, find a toilet. With the assistance of your physician and pharmacist, determine if there are drugs that you are taking that could be contributing to the constipation. See if the drugs can be discontinued or changed.Increse your fluid intake, increase the fiber in your diet by consuming more fruits(papaya, prunes), vegetables, and whole grains. (There are other health benefits from this recommendation as well.) It may be difficult to get enough fiber in the diet to effectively treat constipation, so don't hesitate to take fiber supplements if necessary (wheat bran, psyllium, etc.). Use increasing amounts of fiber and/or change the type of fiber consumed until there is a satisfactory result. Don't expect fiber to work overnight. Allow weeks for adequate trials.

More than likely, you aren't eating enough fiber or drinking enough water. These are major contributors for constipation.
If you eat 5 fruits and veggies a day and drink at least 70 ounces of water (think 3-4 20 oz bottles is adequate hydration for the non-working-out body), and a few days later you are STILL constipated, it could be for a variety of reasons. Maybe you have irritable bowel, or an obstruction, or maybe you're addicted to constipation-causing cheddar, but there's good money that your fiber and water intake isn't high enough.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist who should be able to give you something to help ease this problem. Although you might be embarrassed to do this your doctor will have seen things like this all the time, so you shouldn't be. It could be caused by a number of things, stress for one - it could even be that you were naturally constipated for a couple of days, started to worry about it and that made things worse. I would really talk to someone though as if it carries on it could start to cause you really serious pain and illness, which in the most extreme cases could lead to you having to have a procedure to manually evacuate yourself, so talk to someone while you can!

Make sure to are getting plenty of fiber. Use psyllium, start with one tablespoon a day and work up to 4 a day. Drink plenty of water. Check any meds or supplements you may be taking.

You can use OTC laxative once in a while. Or an enema if needed. Avoid using anything with Senna for a long time as it can damage your heart.

You should go to the doctor. There is something definitely wrong with being constipated for that long.

You could be dehydrated. See the doctor right away because that's a bad thing. If you get too constipated, the stool builds up and the toxins from it leaks into your stomach lining and can kill you.

It means you're full of crap.......literally. If you're constipated for weeks....then you're going to have to see a doctor. You may be impacted....it may be caught in there, and have to be actually dug out manually. This is true.....normally it happens to people who are bedridden. Anyway, make sure you go see a doctor....before things become worse, or dangerous. Best of luck to you.

Constipation causes include too much meat and junk food. Increase fiber intake, drink more water, and you'll probably see more regular bowel movements.

Seriously, drink lots of water.
Add more fruits & vegetables to your diet.
Decrease your meat consumption.
Some moderate exercise helps things move along. Maybe a brisk walk around the block after supper?
Go buy some prune juice. This helps unstop you, & so does coffee.
