Hi there, I wonder why your sure she doesn't have ear mites? Ear mites can only be seen with a microscope after a smear has been taken of the inside of the ear. An ear infection can be painful and definitely can cause a dog to scratch. Fleas tend to stay around the neck, ear and above the tail area. Dogs will certainly scratch if they have fleas. Those are the most obvious and fleas is the only one you could determine yourself. There are also allergies to something or the food she eats. She needs to see a vet to figure out what the problem is.

First, how do you know that she doesn't have ear mites?
Nevertheless... Make a mixture of 1/2 rubbing alcohol and 1/2 hydrogen peroxide to flush her ears with. *Using a syringe or meat baster is easiest to get the fluid into the ear.
Use cotton balls, gauze and Q-tips to gently wipe out (clean) the inside of her ears. Ensure you are very careful with the Q-tips so you don't puncture an eardrum. Ensure you clean them well and that you get them completely dry.
It could be a fungal infection inside the ear that began and then with the constant irritation from the scratching, she could now have a secondary bacterial. She may need to be on an antibiotic and possibly some type of topical such as Panalog. Those you'll either have to get from the veterinarian or live in a farming community where you should be able to get through your Farmers CoOperative.
Good Luck

It is red a raw because it is scratching.
Check to see if you need to clean the ear wax out or the inside the ear ior the ear is dry.
Also using your knuckles not your fingers, behind the ear you will notice an indentation, you can rub that area and most like the dog will rub harder.
If you start hearing crackling noise then most likely it is fluids or ear wax.
It is even worse if you can small bacteria in the ears.

Yeast infections are torture for dogs. Please make an appointment with a vet and have that taken care of very soon. My dog once had a yeast infection and she scratched so much that she burst a blood vessel in her ear and the ear swelled with blood. It was awful. All this before her appointment. She had to have her ear lanced and stitches. I had to keep the blood from accumulating and forming another bubble. Then it turned out that my poor dog was allergic to the stitches and that was another headache. Don't let your dog suffer. Make an appointment with the vet to have your dog looked at before it gets worse.
Good luck.

If you recently switched food or are feeding them a dry food that has any form of corn in it, it could be an allergy. My grandparents have a boxer, and he was getting sores on his ears and scratching them a lot, and it ended up being that he was allergic to the corn in his food. It can be hard to find a dog food that doesn't have corn listed in the top 3-5 ingredients, but almost all natural or organic dog food is corn free.

I had something similar happen to my dog too. He got red inside the ears and all over his underside. The Vet gave him a shot and a big horse pill and said he was allergic to something or had gotten into something that he was allergic to. He cleared right up after the Vet visit. He is an outside dog and lives in the country.

My dog has had this happened twice, and both times it was a yeast infection in the ears, best thing to do is see a vet for some ear drops.

I'm betting that you are saying she doesn't have earmites because you can't see any 'mites' ... but she may have them, because 'mites' are virtually impossible to see with the naked eye. She also may have an 'ear infection' ... either way it really doesn't matter because you should TAKE HER TO THE VET and HAVE HER TREATED so her poor ears don't 'itch' all the time.

Ear Mites can only be diagnosed microscopically, so if your vet has not ruled out ear mites then it is possible. I would stronly recommend a vet visit to have those ears diagnosed and treated as ear problems are extremely painful for a dog or cat.

Put a few drops of mineral oil in her ears, and make sure you cover the rest of the inside too. This will drown the mites, and will help her with the itching. Take to a vet for a check up.
