David, after inciting God to slay them, after numbering the people, he was given three choices:

So God went to David and said to him, "Shall there come upon you three years of famine in your land! Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague in the land? Now then, think it over and decided how I should answer the one who sent me."

David said let us fall into the hands of the LORD for he is merciful, at the floor of Araunah the Jebusite God with held his punishment and David bought the threshing floor from him, to make an altar of sacrifice, Araunah wanted to give David the property, but David said, "I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offeringss that cost me nothing"

David did a great sin in the sight of the LORD, and deserve to die, but as is the case, innocent men generally die when we do not follow the LORD's will supremely. At our own hands we bring death to others because of our disobedient hearts and rebellion. This should teach us to follow God always wholeheartedly and to not do anything without his counsel, and his will. To not do "what seems right in our own eyes", but to seek the LORD always in every aspect of our lives.

You know, that is a great question and I would really like to do some research and find the answer to it if you can only give me any references. The only King I know in Biblical time that was interested in agriculture/farm lands was King Uzziah.
