Probably an effect of alcohol on the metabolism.

"Alcohol, when consumed in excess amounts, has a wide range of ill-effects on an individual's health. Too much alcohol is toxic to vitamins and minerals and at high levels acts as an anti-nutrient. It has a high caloric value, hence the weight gain experienced when consumed in large quantities. It also causes low blood sugar levels and dehydration, leading to an increase in appetite and the classic 'binge eating' characteristic of a heavy drinking session."

I thought this only happened to me! I've gained a few pounds since I had kids. I also enjoy a nightly drink more than I use to. I thought the munchies associate w/ my nightcap was just another indication of my loss of self-control. I do crave the types of things that would be served at a bar - peanuts, pretzels, cheese and crackers, etc. It is all starting to make sense now!

I do think of hard drinkers as non-eaters. Whenever one would come into the hospital, we would make a "banana bag" which was just fluids and vitamins. Most of the alcoholics came in undernourished.

Alcohol gives you an initial high of sugar in your blood stream which causes the pancreas to release insulin, which lowers the blood sugar level (unless, like me, you are diabetic!)

Alcohol does not "eat up the food" in your stomach but it will irritate the stomach lining causing ulcers eventually which is why it is recommended to eat before you drink and while you drink.

This is happens because when you drink a lot of alchol, it eats up a lot of the food and drink that you have already consumed.

This could also happen if you have an empty stomach (haha)

Boiled down, your body is screaming for food and nutrients to help it metabolize and get rid of the toxins. Your organs need the energy to keep at it and get rid of them.
