I know the owners take them to the vet but what is the point of cutting their tails? My dog still has her tail and I want her with a tail.

I also wish that this practice of docking the tails (cutting them off) in pet dogs would also stop. Can't see the point in mutilating them un-necessarily just for the sake of it.

I've read in other places that some gun dogs tails are docked to stop them getting ripped in brambles - but that doesn't explain why other breeds of gundogs, bred for similar reasons, don't have their tails docked.

So to be honest, I don't see the point at all, I think dogs with tails look great & everyone would soon get used to seeing Rotties & Boxers & Spaniels, etc with tails.

Rottweiler With Tail

Since Rotties were bred(in the beginning) as bear dogs, their tails were a liability. A dog with a tail was a target, in a sense. If the bear grabbed the tail, the dog was bear meat. It was an extra part that wasn't needed.

Now, its part of the breed standard. I have seen rotties with tails, and I dont think they look very good. They look too lab-ish. Otherwise, there really is no point. Bulldogs, german pinchers, and some others are also docked. Its a dog thing, I'm not sure why exactly, but there were reasons why. All dogs around the world were bred for a certain purpose and most dogs that get docked tails were for hunting or herding.

Hope this clears things up!

The tails are "docked" or cut off when they are between 3 to 6 days. At the same time dew claws on the rear legs are removed and sometimes the ones on the front as well. It is done without any sedation, it's quick and usually requires one stitch. Rottweilers are large bulky dogs. I imagine one with a tail would knock things off of tables like labs do. If you want yours to keep her tail, I think that is fine. People will ask you what breed she is, though. The older the dog, the more painful the procedure is and the longer the healing is. Doing it when the pup is a few days old is the best way to do it.

Rottweiler puppies have to have their tails docked when they are 2 to 3 days old. This is done at a young age because the nerves are not fully developed and it hurts less. Just like getting a baby human's ear pierced. Not to bad....

They cut off rottweilers tails when they are only a few days old. They do this because it fits the AKC breed standard. If you want your dog to have a tail, then keep the tail. If she is older then she would have to have it surgically amputated anyways, which would be hard on her, and cost you some money. I think tails are cute. Keep her tail.

People just do it for looks basically. Dog shows and the like have a standardized way that certain breeds are supposed to look, so that is what most people follow. There is really no other reason for the tails to be cut other than for looks.

Rotts are born with a tail. It's simply the preference of the breeder to crop them. That is typically done by 3 days old. Contrary to another members answer, AKC does NOT require tails to be cropped.

Because they are retarded and think the breed looks better docked. There is NO PURPOSE to docking tails at all. It used to be done to hunting dogs to prevent burs and such getting caught up in the tail but even hunting dogs are not being docked anymore. It's outdated and to me, makes the dog look stupid. I feel for any dog that someone docks their tails or crops their ears. I think all dogs look adorable just as nature intended.
