Jesus Christ gave authority to St. Peter (first pope) as Christ's representative here on earth until he returns. Christ built his church on St. Peter (the rock)...whatever sins you forgive they are forgiven....

Peter, became head of the Apostles (on this earth physically) after Jesus' ascension. The keys of heaven is the gospel of Jesus Christ and instruction on how to live Holy. Jesus, gave this to Peter and the rest of the Apostles, so that they can give it to the rest of the world. Now, we have it to this day, just the same as God gave it.

It's metaphor. The keys to heaven is the Gospel or his teachings and when he says feed his sheep, he is talking about his people. In layman's terms, he told Peter to take care of and teach his people.

Salvation is through the Catholic Church. Other denominations are members of the Church even if they don't know it. Proverbs say "Despise not your Mother, when she is old" This includes the Catholic Church. She is all Christian's Mother.

You do not understand the statement to ask that question?
Peter got a revelation of who Jesus was and that was the keys to the kingdom not Peter like Catholics teach, and not Jesus like Protestants teach.
But a thought not learned by flesh and blood but by the will of the Father; A revelation is an act of Faith and that is the key to Heaven; Matthew 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.
Look right after Peter says this Jesus expresses joy and promotes him to understanding what he did just said, this was not the voice of a man speaking , but God through Peter testifying what was truth. Revelation is the Key NOT Peter and not Jesus! Also shortly after this statement look what Jesus says to Peter; Matthew 16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
Now I do know I will offend many with these words but Peter was not even converted at this point in time and your scripture about Jesus telling Peter feed my sheep was future after his conversion;Luke 22:32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
Here is Jesus telling Peter in plain words when you are converted feed God's people, this event is at the Last Supper and Peter has been following Jesus for 3-1/2 years and he still has not been converted yet.
John 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
The first one in the Bible to be given this key was Abel;Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
Peter had the gift of Revelation just like Abel did, God speaking through him, not looking to mankind who can fail
