Not really. Depression is generally caused by chemical imbalances in your brain. Those imbalances could, however, be triggered in part by identity struggle. It could be triggered by a lot of things. Here are some things to do to make it better:

1. Get some exercise. Exercise gets your heart pumping, and this raises the endorphin level in your brain, helping to relieve some of the depression. This is not a cure, but it will help! Try to get a half hour every day if at all possible, even if it is just going for a walk.

2. When you are feeling depressed, make a list of the things you like to do, then pick something from that list to do. Keeping yourself occupied will help. Call or visit your friends or family when you can, and try to get involved in some activities outside of class and work so you can make new friends. This will make a big difference. Volunteer at a local organization, the library, a school, the animal shelter or a hospital. You will meet new people and distract yourself from depression.

3. Educate yourself on depression. Go to Google or Yahoo Search and do a search on it. There are MANY websites that deal with depression, and many of them have hotline numbers to help. They also have remedies and suggestions. The more you know about depression, the easier it will be to deal with it!

4. Most importantly of all, talk to someone about it! You can start with a doctor. It does not mean that you HAVE to go on medication, either, though that is one option. There are medications that will help with the depression, but there are other methods that help some people, too. Be open minded, and talk to the experts before you make a decision. You may be able to just get in to see a therapist or something else. There are also programs available that can help people with money problems as well to see a therapist if you cannot afford it. Ask your doctor about this.

Above all, make sure you do something! Regardless of what is causing your depression, you do not have to stay depressed. Good luck!

Depression could be a by-product of an identity struggle but I don't think you could call it the same thing. If a person is living in the city, working as an accountant when he should be living in the country following his passion for raising dogs and throwing pots he might feel depressed that he not following his dream. If a person has recently lost his wife to a long bout of cancer and doesn't know how to comfort their grieving children, he may have normal grief/situational depression that is in no way related to an identity struggle, at least not in the way I read your question.

Identity struggle is a real cause of depression. A person can get caught between who/what they WANT to be, and what their life actually entails. It is repressed more by situation/circumstances than by any outside person(s). Professional help is definitely called for, as a therapist, etc, can aid you in identifying the "things" that are causing negative thoughts for you which are causing your depression.

I think the depression comes first and the identity struggle comes second.

Stress can aggravate depression. I recommend increased "B" vitamins. Doesn't really "cure" but it helps.
