This is for an informational website I'm creating with a partner all about tattoos and their growing popularity. I'd like to get all types of peoples' opinions on the subject, whether you're for or against them.

Why have tattoos become so popular in recent years? Are they an art form or just a trend? Why? How do YOU feel about tattoos?

Tattoos have become more popular and that has been studied through Harris polls and a dermatology association. Isn't everything we do always tracked by trends? Tattoos can be true art forms and still be based on trends. The trend could easily be to get a more artistic-based tattoo for instance, rather than stock zodiac signs, kanji, and tribals.

Tattooing is growing because society no longer finds tattooing shocking and offensive and accepts the art as a means of expression, decoration, memorial, among others. While there are still those that dig their heels in, we are tattooing doctors, lawyers, corporate bigwigs, and grandmothers. Tattooing is accepted as a real profession, no longer carrying a stigma of the back alley scratcher.

I think they've become more popular because the technology used to tattoo has been rising, to where tattoos done today look a lot better than those that were done 20 or 30 years ago. Also, more people are being less close minded about it (with the exception of people like 'masquerade' down there).

As to its status as an art from, its just as much an art form as painting or drawing.

i don't know why tattoos have become so popular in recent years, possibly because of internet and pictures of them being readily available as well as artist networks where people from all over the country can find out about talented artists in other parts of the country.

i think there are tattoos that are art and there are tattoos that are fads. i don't think that tattoos in general are a fad. i think that in 10 years the same number of people will be getting tattoos if not more. however i hope that as the popularity of tattoos grows the awareness will grow that tattoos can be unique wonderful pieces of art but you have to be willing to pay a true artist to do your work. just don't go to joe schmoe down the street and get a piece of junk tattoo.

i LOVE my tattoos and all tattoos that have been well done by a talented artist. i think more tattooers should strive to be great. i think that mediocrity should not be acceptable in the industry.

I feel that tattoos are sort of like a picture. Many people now, use tattoos to help them with something in there lives, others get tattoos for the memory of something, and of course, some people get them to be trendy. I am soon getting one on my arm to help me get through a rough time I went through in my life. I also have another one on my arm that symbolizes my passion for dancing. As far as why they are becoming so popular, I would say it is the same as anything else, media. You see a lot more tattoos than ever, in music videos, tv shows, movies, everywhere. Even the hit show Miami Ink. This is just my opinion on tattoos and why I get them, I hope this helps some.

Some tattoos are cool.
Some are cliche.

People follow the crowd.

It also depends on which country you're in.
Most people in Japan for instance get tattoos for totally different reasons than most Americans.

To be honest, I think the question is not "why has having one become popular" but rather "why has having one become less unpopular?". Certainly the art & tech have improved in recent years, but the sociological reasons are almost certainly tantamount.
I came of age when a guy with a pierced ear was "wierd"; now, who cares? And, if it was a fad, then the fad is still continuing 20+ years later and has expanded a lot.

They're only popular among a certain type of mentality. It's actually a great way to be able to tell the "tattoo type" from the "non Tattoo type" of personality. People who like the kind of person who comes with tattoos can choose them and people who prefer the other type of person are able to stay away.
Personally, I'm the non tattoo type and even though I have a couple of friends with one, I wouldn't have chosen a mate with one. That's just my personal preference, and I'm sticking to it! ;o)

I like tatoos. I feel they have became more popular and they are a form of art to me because I have one that represent my daughter. She love dancing so I have a pair of ballerina slippers with her name on them.

How do you feel about art work on your body that you wouldn't have hanging on your walls? Kind of silly, isn't it?

Personally, tattoos make me think of primitive people getting naked and dancing around the fire for some obscure ritual and tattooing themselves afterwords.
