I call inexpensive, under $200.
For that price range, I know of one camera that really stands out. The Fuji F20. You should be able to find it on line at reputable dealers for $165ish.
Unlike ALL other compact cameras, it works well in low light. It has image quality that rivals the very best $400 Canon compacts, and due to it's unique low noise sensor, it's images appear very silky, like those from a DSLR.
There are plenty of good cameras out there- but this one's a real winner.

You might try Canon PowerShot A530 or Fugifilm FinePix A500.
Each about $100-

You should look at Nikon's Coolpix collection. I shoot pro, but have an L3 that only cost about 125. It's really small and works well for a compact.
