You need practice.
Either a local tutor, or an online tutor. I like using an online tutor for lessons, 3 times a week. They teach via Yahoo messenger and Yahoo voice - so you get both the visual and the vocal practice.
I highly recommend this teacher (you will have to create a free account and log in to view her profile): http://www.language-school-teachers.com/TeacherInfo.asp?UId=3522

I learned to speak Russian while living in Kiev and had 3 hour long lessons a week but i had taught myself basic things with just a book and a CD. Dont be put off its an interesting language and a great part of the world to visit. The Alphabet is simplicity itself once you begin to look at it i would look for other russian speakers in your area or online you will find a lot of people happy to exchange there time to teach you Russian as long as you help them with there English. Unless you speak to a Russian (be it at college or actually in Russia) online is pretty hopeless. I guess a college is the better option but frankly, the best option is to spend 6 months in Russia with a family who don't speak English. You'll soon learn though your grammar may be faulty.

I started learning Russian...first the alphabet which is not that easy then simple words and phrases.I learnt them from a book and an old tape. When it came to the cases I got stuck and did not have anyone to help me.I gave up and started Portuguese instead.Always use real people..it's much better.

it depends on whether you want to get course credit for the course. some online colleges are only good for learning, but can't transfer to a regular college.
you could take a store bought course which will get you started such as rosetta stone, or some computer course which teaches basic conversational russian from some computer software seller.
