Did anyone watch Good Morning Ameica yesterday and see the segment on whats on shopping cart handles?? They found more bacteria, viruses, and fecal matter on cart handles than on public toilets!! Why dont people just wash their hands instead of spreading all this stuff around?? I'm sure it would lower healthcare costs dramatically. That just grossed me out so bad!!! What do you think????

A few years ago, Oprah and her team did a thing on germs and bacteria. Since then I wear my leather gloves for almost everything.

When I was younger, I found I did not get sick in the winter until I put my bike away and had to use public transportation. I knew it was from the germs everywhere.

Oprah found ... this is gross... in hotel rooms, urine in the rug beside every bed... NICE hotels too. She found it in the top bed spread as well as, er other bodily fluids. Shopping carts were particularly noxious. So is fruit that has not been washed, especially grapes she found.

As for public toilets, men's rooms were cleaner with regard to these things. This is because women often take children into the BR with them. Personally, I use a Kleenex to touch the handle as I walk out the door to not replace the germs I just washed off.

People are just lazy. There is a huge "wash your hands" campaign on here in my area of the world. Even at our hospitals now, as dirty as they are, there are stations everywhere to wash your hands. Other than nurses, I have yet to see a civilian use them.

It is just laziness. It is also selfishness. You are right about health care as well as business hours lost due to illness. So such carelessness, when you look at it long term, we pay for this laziness in more ways than we know.

But is it enough for people to actually start washing?

So far, it has not. The thing is, I have a dear friend who works for WHO in Alexandria, Egypt. His field is the Avian Flu Virus. At this point the virus does not transmit person to person, but he feels this is just a matter of time. Already the virus has mutated so that no drugs are effective against it. He tells me that it is just a matter of time before one pandemic or another hits the human race hard. Cleanliness is our best chance to stay healthy in almost all situations.

I send this link to the WHO world map regarding the flu.

Here is a quote from one page:

“CLEAN HANDS ARE THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINST THE THREATENED FLU PANDEMIC” Sir Liam Donaldson.
Infection Prevention More Important Than Ever, Says World Experts - But Research Shows Many Fall Short In Practicing Good Hygiene In Daily Lives

NO-GERMS™ Portable Hand Sanitizer Has Been Proven Effective Against the Avian Flu H5N1 Virus On The Hands, In Independent Tests At Retroscreen Virology, Queen Mary’s School Of Medicine And Dentistry, University Of London.

The sad thing is, people will not learn until the lesson is shoved down their throats and someone dies.

BTW I think totally sterile environments are bad for children. They do have to build up immunities. But, cleanliness should not be compromised.

Are you really so surprised? I mean, every time I go to Walmart, I see a dirty diaper tossed in the parking lot. Every time I'm in the grocery store, I see at least one kid half naked with green snot trails all over his face, touching everything within reach, or some of the unwashed masses pausing to pick every single thing up and then set it back down, or worse, sneeze on it. I worry a lot less about the handle of the shopping cart than I do the food those people have touched.

Lucky for me I never get sick.

So this is new?? NO all of these germs have been around us for eons and knowbody says anything until they come out with a study. So was it ok to NOT wash your hands before all of this came to light? NO
It is also funny how everyone here is saying how gross people are when in fact I would bet anything that they are just as guilty as anyone else. Unless they are OCD or something.
Also if everyone washes adn uses bacterial wipes then what happens is germs will evolve to be even stronger. So i will take my chances with the germs we have now thank you very much.

PS: has any of you ever looked under a microscope at your very own BED!! do that then get back to me. LOL

I think I shop at stores that provide germicidal wipes for cleaning the shopping cart handles. I also think I carry sanitizing hand cleaner with me at all times and use it regularly.
Never underestimate the stupidity of large segments of the population.

You would not believe how many people I see walk out of the restroom without washing their hands. Some people just run them under the water and call itgood. If you're going to go that far, use the soap! Some peope...gross.

There's fecal matter everywhere. If people would at least wash their hands before eating, we'd see a change in America's health. It only takes one dirty hand to make 20 more hands dirty when they touch the same doorknob!
That's why you should wash produce before eating... and stay away from buffets!

I worked in a retail store for a few years and saw several times that when I was in the bathroom, the parents would rush their kids out the door with neither one of them stopping at the sink. That is gross! They are teaching the kids some bad habits.

Your right in saying we all should wash our hands more often, but you also have to think about it in the long run.

When you think about everything you touch all day, we would all be in the bathroom all day washing our hands. Nobody could touch anything.

No such thing as a sterile enviroment.

People are disgusting. Our grocery store has disinfectant sheets to use on the carts. Albertson's by the way.
