It will say that drive D isn't ready. That's because (for some strange reason) D isn't the CD-ROM drive. I don't remember which one it is though... Sorry. Just wanted to tell you what the problem was.

First… If you have Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition, go into your computer's CMOS Setup and see if you can set it to boot to the CD-ROM drive. Those two versions of Windows, not earlier versions or Windows Me, can boot directly from the CD without a driver if the CMOS supports it. The CD-ROM drive will come-up as drive A:. Just type setup at the prompt or whatever.

Hmmm not sure what your problem could be but it may be a scratch or error on your windows CD. What I do to make installation faster and keep my windows cd protected is I format my HD into two partitions with the D partition being fairly small and I copy all of the win 98 installation files to that partition. I run the setup program from the D drive and whenever windows needs to look for a driver or when you want to add a feature it looks to the D drive instead of asking you to insert the cd.

You can use xcopy to copy the files to your d: driver using the syntax..

xcopy e:\*.* d:\ /e

I usually use a copy of the WIn ME boot disk because it comes loaded with generic CD drivers so that the boot disk will be able to see your windows cd.

You are using the wrong process to reinstall Windows 98. This site has a free manual available that will explain the entire format/reload process. Just visit the site and ask for it and they will email it to you.

Why use an unsupported OS when you can get a reliable, up to date operating system plus all the software that you will ever need free. See:

If you have 256MB of RAM - download a full version, if less download XUBUNTU.

Your bios is probable attempting as well from the floppy force or HD. verify the bios boot order. different opportunities are that your CD is undesirable or once you formatted it you probably did not format it as a "gadget" CD.
