I asked the officer and she would not give me any information. She wanted to speak with the owner and made it sound like a life and death situation. We called the IRS office and there is nothing on our account that would warrant such a visit. Anyone have any ideas? We won't find out anything until next week but I am extremely curious.

Maybe they are friends and just want to go to lunch together.

If not, this cannot be good. This is a "confiscation of records kind of unannounced visit. It may not be the business but the owner that is under investigation.

The person being an "officer" rather than just an agent is worrisome as well.

It depends on what type of IRS "officer" visited you. If it was an IRS "special agent," then a criminal referral has been made. If it was a "Revenue Agent" then you are probably looking at a business tax audit. If it was a "Revenue Officer" then your employer has probably not paid its taxes (after a Revenue Agent assessed the taxes).

As the bookkeeper you must be aware of the trust fund recovery penalty and its implications for you personally. If your employer is having tax issues, you, as the bookkeeper, might be on the line.

An experienced tax attorney can help you assess and handle this issue.

Look, there can be many reasons for an audit, and sometimes it is just a random audit. Don't worry about it. They have a right to audit you or your company, they will find stuff that wasn't done right, or they won't, the best action, is to be friendly, help them find anything they want to see, be helpful, not defensive, and things should go well. If you have been hiding things, and get caught, take responsibility . Don't try to hide stuff, or be evasive. If you have done nothing wrong you don't need to worry, if you have made accounting mistakes, they can be corrected.

I'll bet you are curious!

She probably wasn't there to deliver his million dollar refund check. They have probably identified something either in the business or his personal return that looks funny. That doesn't mean that it is, just that they wanted to talk about it and get an explanation.

And no, they aren't allowed to tell you why they are there. If it's something with the business return, you'll probably hear about it soon enough.

Probably all that Colombian coke money that you and your company have laundered in the past year.

Don't front. You know you did.
