Yes it is slowing down global warming. I saw a programme about it once saying that if we were to control for global dimming without doing something about global warming the earth would be inhabitable to live!!

Well its really masking the full effects of carbon emissions, rather than slowing it down. However, we can't tolerate its effects either, so when we address this problem the heating will get that much worse.
I think they should be pouring research effort into looking at very high altitude aerosol dispersion as a last gasp measure to give us more time to address the underlying issues. I must make clear though that this would be as a last resort and should not be viewed as the solution only a small (very small) part of it.
I think there was something floated like this by the Americans, which I initially though was a huge crock of sh*t. But I've been reconsidering this as I think that the situation is potentially so bad that we should not rule out anything that has a possibility of assisting in resolving and ultimately solving this dilemma.
Nevertheless we need to think very carefully about the deployment of such, as the low level particulate pollutants (in the weather system) are causing huge problems as it is. We would have to be extremely careful not to make the situation worse.
Some of the ideas I had were that should such a high level aerosol be dispersed we'd need to make it default safe and have the ability to attenuate its reflective capability - in other words to be able to turn it on or off and have it act essentially neutrally regards the energy balance until we choose to activate it and then be able to change its reflective ability. It would also need to be tamper proof, so that some 'eedyacht' with a CB radio and a malign intent not could cause weather terrorism by interfering with the system.
There's 200 PhD's in that project.

It is generally though that global dimming has already slowed down global warming.

no/ yes / maybe.. Well,i say it like this to point out that the concept of warming and the theory of dimming are both bogus.. Sun spots- caused by huge storms - cause warming here by causing the sun to emit more radiant heat, and less plasma- light. Nothing you can do caused global warming or dimming. proof: one hundred years ago there were 50 times more plant eating animals on earth producing 10 times more "green house gasses". less co2 is being produced on earth now than then, and there is more plant (thanks to irrigation) mass to convert the co2 back to breathable 02. Is breathing causing global warming?. albert gorlioni is a fool playing upon your fears to scare you into voting for his socialist / Communist buddies..

It already has, and we're lucky it did. CO2 gas causes global warming, but the pollutant particles in the air are helping reflect more of the sunlight back into space. If we were to achieve zero particle pollution in the atmosphere over night, the temperature would be 1 or 2 degrees warmer they say and the ice caps would be melting even faster.

intellectually the globe has been dimming for many years. that's partly the reason why global warming is occurring.

it balances it out, global warming is increased through big factories and its pollution, however the pollution causes the dimming. therefore, you are a dumbass

But of course, and I'd not thought of it before but I suppose we can make the choice to dirty up the atmosphere to cool ourselves down.
But since sunlight is the base source of our energy, maybe we just need to get better at harvesting it rather than trying to block it.

Maybe, but planting more trees and avoiding the burning of fuels (that emits CO2) is better 'cause we need sunlight.
