We just adopted a new dog (adult) from a shelter. Overall, she's great, but when she's alone in the house, she gets upset and claws at the front door, scratching big chunks of wood and paint off of the doorframe. We have no where else to close her up in the house, unless we get a crate for her. Is there anyway we can stop her from doing this? If a crate is the only way, can you crate train an older dog?

Probably the reason for him scratching is because he was in a shelter and lord only knows what kind of owners he had before you. You could probably try this spray you can get it at WALMART it is a training spray it is actually for your pets to not pee but I use it for the same reasoning and it works wonders good luck

Use a babygate to keep her in just one room (usually the one she sleeps in), but don't close the door.
Put the radio on a talk station so she thinks theres people about, and a light on for when it gets dark.
And always walk her before you leave, so she sees the outside world.
Dog crates are fine if all else fails, but don't leave her in it for too long, however big it is.

She is doing this because of insecurity.

When she realizes that you will always return she will probably stop doing it, But you need to work on building her confidence.

This means minimizing the time that you leave her all alone to start with, then slowly introducing absences that start off short - and gardually increase in length.

rub lemon juice against the door frames and it will sniff it to know that it will never go near it again.
