Darwin suggested that when a species is experienceing environmental pressure, such as humans are now, it could be an opportunity for them to adapt or to evolve. Considering that 97% of our genome lays dormant, seemingly awaiting to be enacted, perhaps we are attempting to rise to our next evolutionary step but are not recognizing it. On top of this, when one realizes that 90% of our brain is not used, one would be short sited to think that our next step is not a leap in conciousness. Considering that change is not always comfortable, or easily accepted, we should consider that this leap in conciousness would not nesesarily appear comfortable. If one adds in spiritual diciplines, which is easy to do when we consider the full use of our brain power, and considering that the change in conciousness will not be a comfortable one, for me all the evidence points to non-normal states of conciousness, or Christ concousness for those who prefer a spiritual connection. Acceptance is the key.

WOW! What a question. First there are a few "urban myths" in your commentary. They are finding that what we used to think of as "junk" DNA really does have a purpose at some point in an organisms' growth and development. Also, the idea that we only use 10% of our brain is rubbish. Sure, we have 2 lungs when we can get by on 1, but brain tissue is "expensive" for the body to make and maintain. We do not have a full understanding of all the brain functions. That tissue is there for a reason. We just don't understand what it is for yet.
Now, as to the evolution. Of course we are evolving and we don't even have to think about it. It is all about luck. If you happen to have a trait that improves your chances of surviving long enough to reproduce, your genetic code gets passed along. That trait is preserved.! It is not a conscious decision.
As for the spiritual aspects...now your outside of my comfort zone, cause in that arena I can't prove anything. Sorry!

I do believe there is a very real possibility we will genetically engineer ourselves into a different species within 1,000 years or so.

By the way, there is no evidence that we don't use 90% of our brain. Quite the opposite. Various machines, like MRI and so, on can and have been used to map activity in the brain while test subjects do various mental activities, like reading or drawing or doing math, and the scans clearly show activity in 100% of the brain.
