See a vet or animal nutritionist. What type of dog is it? What's his diet consist of now? How old is the dog? Has he been tested for possible diseases/disorders that can cause weight gain, such as hypo-thyroidism?

Before you spend all your money on a vet visit - you should try dieting along first. Some simple suggestions:
1. Make sure that you are feeding him a good "name-branded" food. We like to use Eukanuba since it doesn't have sugar in it like grocery store brands. Only feed hard food - never soft unless your vet tells you otherwise.
2. Read the label on the outside of the food. It states how much a dog should eat compared to his weight. We feed our 10 pound puppy 1/4 a cup to 1/2 cup a day only. You can also find the amount online under the breed of dog you have.
3. Don't feed him any human food. Not a little of this or a little of that.. hard but very important to the health of your dog.
4. Play lots in the house and outside. Talk lots of shorter walks - never a long one since you have a small dog. Take a few blocks at a time and then go home. You shouldn't expect a chubby one to do too much at first - just like with humans you have to work up to a longer walk. We also like to play catch in the house. It is good at running and exercise.
5. When feeding, don't leave food out the whole day. A dog can eat twice or even once a day and be just satisified and it is completely healthy. If you leave a whole bowl out, some breeds will want to eat the whole day!

After a few months of doing this, if his weight doesn't seem to start going off (it is slow just like in humans), then you should consult a vet. Since you are just thinking about him going on a diet - I wouldn't waste your money on hearing the vet telling you the things I just told you. :) Good Luck! Happy dieting!

It depends what kind of dog it is. I've read in dog magazines that you should try feeding them fruit, especially seedless watermelon. It helps them and gives them more energy while not adding on those extra pounds. Also try feeding them smaller portions throughout the day instead of a lot only like once a day (just an example). Good luck

I would not feed your dog for the next three months. After the three months the fat should be gone and your dog can resume a normal diet.

He needs to be eating less and getting more exercise. take a look at what you are feeding him. the guidlines on the food bags are usually pretty good. actually measure it out, a lot of people use a scoop thinking it is a one cup measure, but it turns out to be MUCH more than that! cut back on treats, and offer him things like baby carrots (most dogs love them). no junky table food! get him out for more walks. the weight should gradually drop off.

Check with your vet and find out roughly how much he needs to lose. Get a T4 thyroid test to make sure he is not low thyroid - it is very common and a common reason dogs get fat - my dog had that problem and I know of two others. Get a recommendation for a reduced calorie food from your vet.

And get him some more exercise.

I would first start with a vet visit to check and see if your dog has an underlying problem that would be causing him to gain weight, I would ask your vet how much weight would be recommended for weight loss as well as what type of food to feed or if you should decrease his current brand.

Check with your vet on this to see exactly the amount, but each day, feed him a bit less than he normally eats. Like I said, check with your vet first to see the amount that you need to feed him. REMEMBER:ON A "DOGGIE DIET", NEVER FEED HE/SHE LEFTOVER PEOPLE FOOD AND GIVE HIM AT THE MOST, 2 DOG TREATS PER DAY!
