We've had our cat for 5 years now without any problems re toilet training and spraying. Two nights ago he soiled and wet our spare bed. Last night he sprayed our (material) couch. I know the difference between soiling and spraying... I was wondering if there would be a reason he's just started doing this? And how do I prevent him from spraying our couch again? We are having it professionally cleaned today... Don't want to shell out $80 again if he does!! And please don't tell me to kill him etc. That's just ridiculous. Thanks.

Is he neutered? Cause if he isn't, then getting him neutered is the best fix.

If he is, then take him to the vet to make sure he doesn't have a bladder problem.

If that is good, there may be a new cat in the area or something that is triggering this. Spray him with a water bottle evereytime you catch him in this behaviour. That's about all you can do.

Good luck

Make sure the litter box is clean and that kitty is getting the attention he deserves. Sometimes with my moms female cat, she'll poop in the dining room if she feels unloved enough. They have, if it gets bad enough, plug in air fresheners that release relaxing pheremones that makes the cat not stressed out, no spraying. Theres also some sort of bitter apple scent (can't remember what it was called) that people have used to keep cats away from certain areas of the house.

Try this stuff called TKO. You put it where the cat just sprayed, and not only does it smell good and help clean the stain, it prevents your cat from peeing there again.
