I mean is it really worth doing? The only reason I can see in doing it is to improve my resume, and let people think I'm a good and caring person. Otherwise I see no reason to do it?

Is there a reason to volunteer?

if you care about humanity as a whole, then that should be reason enough

First and foremost volunteering helps improve your community by feeding the poor, helping and feeding the elderly, cleaning up public areas, etc... If no one "pitched in" to do these things our communities would be much worse places to live.

Secondly helping others makes you feel better about yourself. There is no quicker way to build self-respect than helping others.

If it makes you feel good about yourself and it improves not only the quality of your life but others lives in your community as well I really can't think of a good reason NOT to volunteer.

Is there a reason to NOT volunteer?

Jesus said that whatever you do for the least of these you do unto Him.

If you are only doing it to let people think you are good and caring and to boost your resume then you are doing for the wrong reasons.

Get your life right with the Lord then you won't even be asking this question.

Some day you will die and there will be nothing left of you but the memory of you.

Otherwise, there is not reason because if you do not have a genuine urge to help people because you just really want to make their lives better (like some of us) than there is nothing I can say to you to make it so.

I do it to love others.

There's scripture in Matthew about it.

I'll go find it...

It's all leading up to verse 40

Matt. 25:31
The Final Judgment
31 “But when the Son of Man[a] comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. 32 All the nations[b] will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,[c] you were doing it to me!’

Footnotes:

Matthew 25:31 “Son of Man” is a title Jesus used for himself.
Matthew 25:32 Or peoples.
Matthew 25:40 Greek my brothers.

I don't think you'll be able to volunteer anyway if your heart is not in it. Not for very long, anyway. You need to have a passion for any volunteer work that you do, otherwise you're right, it's résumé material only.

Not for you, apparently.

The reason to volunteer is obvious to those who actually are good, caring people.

Altruism, giving without expectation of reward brings true peace and happiness to the mind... very very good karma.
