I have Windows Media Player version 10, tried upgrading to 11 and that did nothing. I also had Nimo's codec pack installed. I have tried multiple combinations of installing and uninstalling both windows media and nimo's codec pack to no success. Whenever I try to play a file now I get this message:

Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I am then prompted to send an error report...and windows media player closes. Any ideas how to fix this? Uninstalling and reinstalling windows media doesn't seem to work

When you send the error report, look carefully to see if you get a link back from Microsoft that tells how to correct the problem.

The best suggestion I saw was from Doug C. Do a System Restore to a date prior to downloading the avi file. Anything else you downloaded during that time will be wiped out, but this will solve the immediate problem. Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and System Restore. Pick a bolded date that is a day or so before your avi download. Let the system restore to that date. You should be OK then.

I think the first ideea would be to download the updates from Microsoft. If it doesn't work send me an e-mail with more dates
