The believing dead weren't suffering in hell. The believing dead were in one chasm of hades, while the unbelieving were in a separate chasm, with suffering. The believing dead were in comfort in Abraham's presence (you can read about that in Jesus' parable of Lazarus and the rich man).

The unbelieving dead, as the rich man was, were and are in torment to this day, never to escape.

Today, since Jesus has risen from the dead and full payment for our sins was made by him on the cross by His shed blood, now that first chasm is empty. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. But the other chasm, the chasm of torment for the unbelieivng, unbelieving still go there, and it one day too will be emptied, where the unbelieivng will be shown the case against them, and they will be cast into the lake of fire for eternity.

God is nothing if He is not a fair God. There are many who die in this life without an opportunity to hear the word of Christ. Jesus open the gates in the spirit world so that preaching could begin and all those that had not the opportunity in life could receive it in death.

It is far preferable to receive Jesus Christ in life but God will not ignore those who for various reasons were not able to accept Him here.

Adam was not among those who were preached to. Adam knew God and had already accepted the true Gospel. Actually, he would have been one to help Jesus with that work, much like Jesus chose others to help him here.

The word "hell" has more than one meaning in the Bible.
It can mean the grave or place of punishment.
Jesus' body was in the grave (hell) for three days.
Upon death His Spirit went to the Father, not to Hell (the place of punishment), as He had fully paid the price for sinners on the cross.
Remember His words before He breathed His last-
"It is finished!" (Paid in Full!)
Remember what He said to the thief on the cross beside Him-
"Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me IN PARADISE."

Yes, he descended into to hell and he went down there to conquer it so that through his conquering hell, we wouldn't ever have to see it.

He paid every price while he was here. He conquered death, the grave, and hell. Only then did he ascend into heaven.
