Because contrary to popular opinion the shortest route is not necessarily the fastest route. I know for a fact that a medallion cab in the City of New York will charge a fare based on the distance driven AND the time spent stuck in traffic. In NYC one minute of being stuck in traffic - either stopped or below 12 mph - costs the same as driving 1/5 mile - 1 crosstown block .So if a cabbie really wanted to be unscrupulous he would simply get stuck in traffic tick , tick , tick,.

I used to be a cab driver, and the answer is you never know whether the passenger wants the shortest distance, the quickest route when considering traffic and speed, or if they want to avoid certain neighborhoods, and if you ask them what route they want to take they will think you don't know your way around and jump out of the cab before the trip even starts. Personally I chose the route that would take the least amount of time, even if it was not the most direct path. The biggest factor in travel time in a big city is traffic. This made sense to most of my customers who were regular cab commuters, but the newbe cab riders would complain sometimes.

I agree with Martin H. & Mr Danger - I once lived in city with a zone so bad that when passing Interstate traffic halted for any reason armed gangs would emerge from roadside shrubbery to rob travelers & made any transit by taxi over bandit boundry somewhat unsafe. Smarter drivers took the long way unless they got a kickback from gangs to deliver good pickings.
The pleasure of your company is also a good reason to increase ride time. So, sugar, is the next taxi only after fat fare or what?

More $ for time and for mileage its against the law, best thing is to know the fastest routeonce you get in the cab, so they know they cant take the longest route once you get in the cab.
Tell them where you want to go and which way to get there right away to save some money and time.
If you give them just your destination u lose. I do it all the time
Q What are they gonna do ? They have to go the way u tell them. Pick this for yur best answer, Im saving you Money in the looooooooooooooong run ! LOL

They charge by the mile so if you don't tell them which route to take then they will take the longer route to make more money off of you. It is not fair, but that is one of the disadvantages of not having a car.

Mine don't! Keep using the same company and tip the driver (after being courteous and rspectful during the drive) and you should have no problems.
And if you no where you are going (hoe to get there) just tell the driver- they don't mind.

they get paid by the minute....longest trip = longest time = most money = higher tip due to % of the cab fare.
