In addition to the pilot, the APU would also be whining. A small jet engine in the tailcone that powers climate control, hydraulics, and electrics after shutdown of the mains. If you have the right perspective, you'll see a heat register departing the left side of the cone, or sometimes the very back, depending on model.

Maybe you hear the engines winding down. If your'e getting off the plane when you hear it, it's probably the APU, being the engines aren't running when people are getting off.
