I think you should be addressing your question to the Muslims, not the Christians, because that is pretty much how Mohammad was given the message. Similarly, the Book of Mormon was presented as a voice from a hat, if I recall correctly. I know of no books of the Bible that claim to have been inspired to mystics in caves, out of caves, or otherwise. The "books" of the old testament were passed down generation to generation through an oral history and later compiled into the Torah. The same is largely true for the books of the new testament, except that so many of the books were, in fact, written letters that were later collected and included in the biblical canon.
In one way or another, nearly all the biblical writings are based on historical occurences. Even the great flood, an event recorded by numerous ancient sources, actually occured (as shown by archaeological evidence, namely a massive layer of clay in the region), even if not in the way it has been presented in Genensis.
To respond to your question directly, if I were to see people who thought God was talking to them, I would certainly take their claims with a grain of salt. However, in our world of philosophy and science which delves into the mysteries of the mind and of the quantum, who is to say that the way most people perceive the world is the "correct" way. Even some of the great fathers of modern psychology, for instance Jung, have contemplated the uncanny perception of the mentally deranged to connect to what he called the archetypes, a sort of overarching mode of communication and symbolism inherent in the human mind.
Lastly, you have probably heard that the Bible is "divinely inspired". This catchphrase does not mean that a person saw visions or heard voices and then wrote down what he heard, only that we believe the collected works of the Bible touch on something metaphysically greater than the world's materialism.

Check out "A Course in Miracles", published by the Foundation for Inner Peace in the 1990's. It is am amazing work. A professor (an atheist) began hearing a voice that told her to "take notes". She did as the voice said and wrote this book - over a thousand pages. It is clear that the voice was that of Jesus Christ and you will be very surprised that he corrects and clarifies many passages in the bilble. He says the people who wrote these passages interpreted his actions incorrectly. Although the book has a Christian slant, it contains a practical "workbook for students" that has 365 daily lessons to help all humans gain inner peace and be able to act with love and compassion. I am not religious and have only recently begun investigating spirituality. I also have a scientific background and do not easily "buy into" things that cannot be proven. But strangely, I can believe this happened!

It would be if it was just one person, like Muhammad for islam. No proof, no history, no witnesses. I guess most writers work that way. Stephen King says his stories are out there already and he just writes them down. The Bible though has a lot of history that is very accurate. There are a lot of witnesses and books by more than one person. There are prophesies that have been fulfilled. There's also the Word of God. Put it all together and it works and it's Holy.
May God Bless you.

Ok, why does everyone get the Mormons and Christians confused? The person who heard voices in their head was Joseph Smith, creator of the Mormon religion. The 12 disicples where there with Jesus therefore, witnessed his work and teachings.

the ones who wrote the books that make up the bible were intelligent men. they did not simply sit in a dark cave and write whatever came to their mind. they wrote of stories of Gods love and of the miracles Jesus did. this are things that can be seen. and even still when one sits and reads there is alot to be learned that helps with everyday struggles. the word is still ever present in the world we live in today. i will pray for you my friend, i hope one day you will realize the greatness of God's love.
God bless

What about one man -- or woman -- sitting in a well-lit study with a computer, typewriter or yellow legal pad and pen. Many authors I've read interviews with talk about hearing their characters talking to them as they write their short stories or novels. Are they all crazy? Does their manner of working affect their book sales? I don't think so.

I would want to find out more, but only if they were really a Christian. Paul heard voices and wrote to several nations and churches, but everyone, except the religious leaders and some people, wanted to know more. They were definitely hungry for the Word.

It only seems realistic to you because of your lack of data. PLEASE, listen a moment. There was a time when the holy spirit descended upon the people who would write the books of the bible. It was at that time that the spirit instilled in them all of the information that they needed to write whichever part of the bible they were expected to write. So there were no " VOICES" , as you ineptly put it .

Have you aver wondered how a dust would somehow turn into a wonderfull creature like you? Don't you think is is more easier and logical to believe some supernatural power spoke to your ears than accepting your ancestor was a protozoan?
I find believing the Bible more Logical..yes Logical and Easy than the other garbish the so called "scientists" preach.

Oh my god you just made me question my Christianity. The bible was written by people who heard voices?
You are so wrong. Go read some basic books about who wrote the bible and when and how it was written.
